The STATCOM (Static Synchronous Compensator) is a next-generation reactive power compensation device that uses power electronics to maintain voltage stability in electrical grids, dampen frequency oscillations, and improve power quality. Unlike traditional capacitor banks and reactors, the STATCOM responds in milliseconds, providing dynamic compensation for both inductive and capacitive reactive power, thus preventing voltage variations in power lines.
Key advantages in transmission and distribution projects:
- Ultra-fast response: Thanks to power electronics.
- Bidirectional compensation: Generates and absorbs reactive power as needed.
- Better power quality: Avoids the need to build new lines by optimizing the capacity of existing ones.
- Integration with renewable energy: Stabilizes the interconnection of wind and solar farms.
With the increasing integration of intermittent renewable energy, STATCOM technology becomes critical for maintaining frequency and voltage stability in modern grids. The projects we are coordinating today are laying the foundation for more resilient and efficient electrical systems.
Within ENTIA, I have had the pleasure of successfully directing and completing the I20 Phase 1 Project, which has been the largest STATCOM development in all of Latin America with ±1,100 MVAr and has positioned us as key figures in the sector. Additionally, we are currently in the Civil Works phase of the P20 NE1 project in Nuevo Laredo, while we simultaneously look forward to new challenges and opportunities.
Finally, the implementation of STATCOM requires not only technical expertise but also appropriate work methodologies and a multidisciplinary staff eager to work, learn, and be ready to face whatever comes; for this reason, I want to conclude by thanking my entire ENTIA team for the effort they have contributed to achieve these goals.
